The author of Royal Roots, Patricia Wynn Brown grew up with the fairy tale stories told by her Grandma Aggie which were so vivid she thought she was actually watching TV when she heard them. Patricia was slow to learn to read but eventually found biographies and memoirs to be the most interesting genre as she saw how others lived. This enticed her greatly as she was growing up with the home disorder of a mentally ill disabled vet Dad and her horizons seemed halted at their front screen door.

When she began her professional career post her degree in communications (summa cum laude), a colleague would listen to her stories and tell her she should publish them. An alternative paper editor named Bill Estep did just that. Things rolled along from there.

Patricia entered a writing contest at the James Thurber House and Museum and won, and then won again. The third time she entered her story titled, Ich Bin Ein Cheerleader, and so that she would not be seen as attempting to win too many times, she submitted under the colorful nom de plume, Bambi Chartreuse. She won again.

These victories included reading her essays at public events and despite severe stage fright, she soldiered on. The response was encouraging as people laughed and were moved emotionally by her tales. Nudged forward by this she went on to develop a one-woman humor (comedy + tragedy) memoir show called HAIR THEATER BEAUTY SCHOOL which traveled across the country, and in Paris and Edinburgh. Her fundraiser shows raised $300,000 for wigs for women in chemotherapy. Patricia is a two-time cancer survivor (malignant melanoma).

She is a member of the Medicine and the Arts Board at The Ohio State University, was emcee of the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop, and remains part of Bombeck conference. She is a featured humorist in the PBS documentary about the life of Bombeck titled “Legacy of Laughter.” Patricia also began volunteer projects at the Ohio Reformatory for Women that included a “charm school” about presenting ourselves to others. Alicia, an inmate, wrote, “This session was amazing. I love how you made me laugh. You gave me back self-love and self-acceptance.”

Patricia has begun a book club at the women’s prison that features her book Royal Roots and targets incarcerated Veterans and Baby Boomers, but welcomes all.

A donation of $1 from every ROYAL ROOTS book sold will go to programming at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, located in Columbus, Ohio. Patricia Wynn Brown’s new memoir, Royal Roots, and the museum, both emphasize the healing power of a person’s story.
